Henley Hall was recently the recipient of several awards recognizing its unprecedented design and sustainable architecture. The four most recent awards are as follows, both the AIA Pennsylvania Architecture Merit Award and COTE (Committee on the Environment) Award of Excellence, AIA Santa Barbara Honor Architecture Award, and the AIA Philadelphia Architecture Award. Each award gives recognition to all the efforts made by the architecture firm, KieranTimberlake, to design an energy efficient and LEED Platinum Certified Henley Hall.

AIA PA: Architecture Merit Award
AIA PA: COTE (Committee on the Environment) Award of Excellence

Each year, AIA Pennsylvania acknowledges the finest architectural designs originating in Pennsylvania that “promote economic prosperity and the health, safety, and welfare of the public.” The awards are given to recognize not only the architecture, but the advances towards creating more sustainable and environmentally conscious buildings.
The Committee on the Environment Award of Excellence is awarded each year to architecture that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries with sustainable designs and materials: “The COTE Awards jury cites the energy, well-being, resources, and discovery measures as stand-out achievements of Jeff and Judy Henley Hall. The jury shared, ‘This project is a remarkable example of the integration of passive cooling strategies and architectural expression. It presents an effective solution for improving efficiency in high-energy buildings in a way that enhances the experience and well-being of its occupants. The success of the design is a result of the restraint with which it serves the technical and spatial components of the program.’”

The Architecture Merit Award jury notes, “IEE at UCSB required a headquarters that could adapt to a fast-arriving future of scientific research. Henley Hall is a 49,900 sq ft. LEED Platinum aspiring laboratory and education building housing laboratories, offices, and collaboration space. The three-story building is a building that breathes and connects to its stunning natural surroundings while integrating energy-saving measures that minimize operational carbon.” The jury continues, “Henley Hall really struck us because it felt really appropriate to its place, and integrates passive ventilation for its air systems. You can see that there’s great solar shading integrated with the façade of the building, and it has a material pallet that echoes its environment in a really nice way. It also has really striking interiors.”

AIA Santa Barbara Honor Architecture Award

This award is given annually to a project demonstrating the highest level of commitment to sustainable design. AIA Santa Barbara’s Awards are given to reflect Santa Barbara’s design community and focus on global issues such as sustainability. Henley Hall’s architectural design is a reflection of just that.

Each year, AIA Santa Barbara considers the following criteria while assessing new projects within the community: “quality of design, resolution of the program idea, sustainable responsibility, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.” The AIA Santa Barbara Design Award jury seeks architectural excellence that embodies these qualities, and this year, Jeff and Judy Henley Hall proved just that. The jury reviewed designs for residential architecture, restoration and renovation, and urban design, and found KieranTimberlake’s efficient design and use of sustainable materials worthy of recognition.

AIA Philadelphia Architecture Award

“Jeff and Judy Henley Hall at University of California, Santa Barbara, received the Gold Medal and the Sustainability Award. This project is a 49,900 square foot, LEED Platinum laboratory and education building, provides laboratories, offices, and collaboration space. Henley Hall's massing is split along programmatic lines to optimize comfort while minimizing energy use. This approach to program organization turned Henley Hall into a research building that breathes. Offices, classrooms, and gathering spaces are oriented around a three-story, open-air atrium in the east wing. In the west wing, sensitive and tightly controlled laboratory spaces are sealed from the elements. The east wing's automated natural ventilation system dissolves the boundaries between outdoors and in.

Further connecting the building to its stunning surroundings, a fritted glazing filters daylight to climate-sensitive research spaces. In the landscape are outdoor workspaces shaded by a deep umbra and flowering trees. The new Henley Hall provides a physical and spiritual home for the vanguard of energy research by integrating energy-saving measures that minimize operational carbon without sacrificing comfort, quality, or aesthetics.”
